QB Josh Freeman signs 5-year contract with Bucs
TAMPA – Josh Freeman is officially a Buccaneer. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced early today the signing of the former Kansas State quarterback to a five-year contract. Terms of the deal were not released by the club but ESPN reported that the deal was for $36 million and included $10.245 million in guarantees. The most important guarantee centers around Freeman, who can now take part in camp workouts from the very beginning.
Favre anguished over whether to play again
And on the 87th day he was anguished. Two-plus months after the Brett Favre-to-the-Vikings soap opera began, and days before a decision was expected to be announced, ESPN reported Thursday that the 39-year-old quarterback “remains anguished about whether he should come out of retirement and join the team.” Did anyone really think the saga would end today?
TORTS' ADVICE TO RANGERS WHO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH BRASHEAR
IF JOE Lieberman can continue to sit in the Senate Democratic Caucus in the wake of the 2008 presidential campaign, then Donald Brashear can be welcomed in the Rangers locker room a few months after nearly beheading Blair Betts in Game 6 of the playoffs. At least that’s the opinion of head coach John Tortorella, who didn’t use that analogy, but told The Post last week that Brashear’s attributes as an enforcer and teammate should trump issues from the past.
It's ready, set, goal: Everything's lining up for Blackhawks
Barring a trade for a bruising veteran defenseman — and general manager Stan Bowman could pull one off — things should quiet down for the Blackhawks until training camp starts in September. The club’s second fan convention, which wrapped up Sunday at the Chicago Hilton, suggested that everything is in place for a run at the Stanley Cup. When was the last time you could say that about the Hawks during the offseason?
Pacers agree to 1-year deal with point guard Watson
Point guard Earl Watson has agreed to sign with the Pacers once he clears waivers, a person with knowledge of the situation said Friday night. It’s unknown how much the one-year deal is worth. Watson was waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. He’ll be on waivers for seven days. Signing Watson would soften the blow of losing Jarrett Jack if the Pacers don’t match Toronto’s four-year, $20 million offer to him by Monday.
He can’t forget the past
For starting quarterbacks who play one of the worst games of their career, there is usually one salvation. There’s always another game to be played the next week to erase the memory. That wasn’t the case, however, for Jake Delhomme. The last six months might as well have been six years for Delhomme, whose five-interception performance in the 2008 NFC Divisional round of the playoffs cost the Carolina Panthers a chance at hosting the conference championship.
Arrest Made In Connection With McNair Shooting
Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives arrested ex-con Adrian Gilliam Jr. for providing the gun that was used to kill former NFL quarterback Steve McNair. McNair was shot to death on July 4 at his Nashville condominium by his 20-year-old girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi in what’s been ruled by police as a murder-suicide.
Video shows Jones in Vegas nightclub
LAS VEGAS — Never-before-released court documents and amateur video help provide the clearest picture yet of what happened inside a Las Vegas strip club on Feb. 19, 2007, when Adam “Pacman” Jones showered scantily clad dancers with money. Just minutes after “making it rain,” Jones was involved in a fight inside the club. A short time later, three people were shot outside the club.
Mets Deny Claims That Jose Reyes Suffered A Setback In Port St. Lucie
ATLANTA – Jose Reyes may have suffered a setback in Port St. Lucie Friday, although the Mets denied it. After trainers placed a ladder on the ground for Reyes to use in agility drills, the shortstop reportedly pointed to his balky hamstring and indicated he didn’t want to proceed. team spokesman denied the eyewitness account by the St. Lucie News-Tribune, saying Reyes wasn’t scheduled to do that type of activity because he had a demanding workout the previous day.
Law not making big first impression
LAS VEGAS — One of the first players to emerge from the locker room and take off from UNLV’s Cox Pavilion was point guard Acie Law. After spending much of his first two seasons on the bench in Atlanta, Law expressed relief over getting out of Atlanta when the Warriors acquired him last month in the Jamal Crawford trade. He said he was hoping the Warriors were his chance to finally show what he can do.
