UFC 81: Breaking Point Running Commentary thread
Post your thoughts on the fights here, any predictions? it’s a heavyweight laden card this Saturday and it looks like there might be some competition in a weak division of late.
Frank Mir v. Brock Lesnar
I’m rooting for Lesnar but has he learned enough in a short period of time against the seasoned veteran Mir?
Tim Sylvia vs. Antonio Noguiera
Pride vs. UFC. It’ll be war in this interim heavyweight bout scheduled for 5 rounds. I’m not discounting Sylvia here, he’s got a decided reach and height advantage and Noguiera did not look very good in his last match in the octagon vs. Heath Herring.
What do you all think about this card?

Lesnar is a beast
he's freakishly athletic for his size and I think Mir's best days are definitely behind him. sad to say but Mir's motorcycle accident a few years back really changed things for him. he's lucky to be in a ring at all. -The AnswerJanuary 31, 2008 - 2:50pm

Griffin v. Thibeau
good first round. lots of stand up exchange action. I think Griffin won this round, but Thibau took Griffin down a couple of times.February 2, 2008 - 8:27pm

2nd round
action slowed down a bit, but griffin continued to score on the stand up, and thibeau trying to counter and go for the takedown. once down, though thibeau has been able to do nothing.February 2, 2008 - 8:34pm

and the 3rd round ends
Griffin was just so strong in this fight. he'd get taken down and defend then get back to his feet. Tibeau just couldn't keep him down. Griffin pushed the fight so it should be 30-27 for Griffin.....and yes, Griffin won by 30-27 unanimously!February 2, 2008 - 8:40pm

Nate Marquardt vs. Jeremy Horn
Round 1: Marquardt gets take down on Horn and hits him with some big shots from guard position. Nate with some fists, elbows, and knees that drop Horn. Horn defending on ground, which he does well to move into a gogo plata attempt. Marquardt gets out but that was close. round over. Round 2: Horn had Marquardt on his back for the first time. but Nate got out, slapped a standing guillotine on Horn, who was shooting for a takedown. Marquardt torques it, and Horn taps out from a seated position. Marquardt by submission tapout (guillotine choke)February 2, 2008 - 9:25pm

David Heath vs. Tim Boetsch
Announcers are saying Boetsch took this fight on 10 days notice. That doesn't sound like a plan for success. Round 1: Boetsch hits Heath with some push kicks. He's taking it to Heath. They exchange strikes and Boetsh hits him with a few knees. Boetsch keeps pulling down on the back of the head and hitting him with knees. Boetsch throws Heath to the ground like it was nothing and then finished him with strikes to the head while Heath was on his hands and knees. Wow! I didn't see that coming. Tim Boetsch wins by TKO (strikes)February 2, 2008 - 9:37pm

Great coverage
Thanks for the updates. Can't wait for the Lesnar fight! I think its right now.February 2, 2008 - 9:44pm
Surreal. A bunch of WWE stars in attendance like Kurt Angle, Steve Austin and Undertaker.
1st Round: Lesnar took no time to take him down and started pounding. But he hit Mir in the back of the head, and gets deducted a point. Holy moses. Lesnar took him down again, beating on him, but Mir put up a good defense with his guard, going for arm bars. He somehow gets Brock's ankle and submits him with an ankle lock, make it a knee bar! Game over. Mir forces Lesnar to submit in a battle of different styles. MMA beats wrestling. For now.

Lesnar v. Mir
It's time. People were probably looking forward to this fight compared to Sylvia-Noguiera. Can Lesnar hang in the MMA? About to find out!Surreal. A bunch of WWE stars in attendance like Kurt Angle, Steve Austin and Undertaker.

Ok, on to Sylvia-Noguiera...
hold on, the announcers have said Nogueira has never been knocked out. Not true. I can name at least once, he got KTF out by Sokoudjou in PRIDE. I just made you a liar, Joe....
Round 1: Minotaur gets rocked and tim tries to finish him off from guard. Tim controlling this fight due to his range, height, and ability to get off first. Tim knocked him down twice and almost got Noguiera, but to his credit the Minotaur hung on and took down Sylvia at the bell. Both fighters look gassed already.Tim wins round 1.
Round 2: much closer round, but the story here is Antonio's inaability to take Sylvia down. Exchanges were pretty equal but you have to give that round again to Sylvia.
Round 3: Noguiera goes down with Sylvia on top, and he works his way around to a guillotine on Sylvia. Sylvia chokes out! what a turnaround! Sylvia taps out. Noguiera flipped Sylvia around so Nog was on top, flipped to side control. wow.
good night, sylvia. hahahah. Sylvia taps out due to guillotine. What heart by Nog to hang on and find a way to win.

Sylvia vs. Noguiera
UFC v. Pride. What the hell. I'm still recovering from the Lesnar fight. Lesnar had him, he was pounding on him. Suffice it to say, Mir was squirming and moving on the ground, but Lesnar was still hitting him. It came down to Mir's MMA jiu-jitsu skills. He kept Brock at bay despite taking some punishment and stayed calm and patient til the opening for some arm bars and then the knee bar opened up. Mir is back for the heavyweight title after this. Brock has some skills but I'm not sure he can ever be a strong MMA fighter given the steep curve that he is up against to learn jiu jitsu, grappling, and submission defense. We'll see, though.Ok, on to Sylvia-Noguiera...

reminds me of Minotauro's win over Bob Sapp
overpowered and over-manned, Nogueria was able to fend off the proverbial "giant" when he beat Warren Sapp's brother, Bob Sapp. the same thing rang true tonight when he disposed of Tim Sylvia after 10 minutes of getting beat down senselessly. -bBReply
