The Fan's Player

Certain great players are known to everyone in their media market, while others transcend locality and become national icons. There are too many great players for the casual observer to remember and only a limited number enter the historical vernacular. There will always be forgotten greats. The guys that were entertaining and productive, but not hall of fame quality. As a Dodgers fan, I remember Eric Karros having some fantastic years, but most only know him as a random commentator. Lance Berkman, I fear, will be overlooked outside of Houston. It’s unfortunate that Moises Alou is spending the end of his career in the spotlight of New York when he is much less consistent and exciting. I remember watching him play for Montreal and thinking, “This guy is someone I’d trade for.” He won’t make it to Cooperstown, but I can’t think of another contemporary corner outfielder besides Bonds who had a much better career. (Alright, Sosa did.)

Who else will be sadly forgotten?

Sorry to hear you're a Dodgers fan. As a fan of the almighty SF Giants, I can say with almost 100% certainty that J.T. Snow will be easily forgotten. His big time spotlight in Boston was well after his highly useful years and he was probably the best defensive first baseman in baseball for 8-10 years.

Speaking of Giants

How about Matt Williams? Loved by the Giants and their fans, but relatively forgotten except for a decent year or two.

Williams was really popular with the Giants. Matt Williams and Will Clark are a couple of my family's favorite all time Giants. Larry Walker is another guy that will be forgotten quickly because of his fading days in St. Louis.
