TE's worthy of being in the flex (RB/WR/TE) position?
In recent years, the emergence of the TE in football as an receiving weapon has been unprecedented. It started with Gonzo, Heap, etc and then super Gates came along. Now things have steadied out and there’s about 10 TE’s which are all decent WR threats..off the top here are some
Gates, Shockey, Gonzo, Winslow, Heap, Heath Miller, Vernon Davis, Dallas Clark, Chris Cooley, Gregg Olsen, Owen Daniels, etc etc etc
The point is that you could argue that TE’s are better than the #2 receiver (and in some cases the #1) on their teams.
I’ve been in some leagues where the flex position is allotted to RB/WR/TE but not many. Should this be a standard now?

First after Witten’s
First after Witten's outstanding season last year, you cannot forget to mention him on that list. I think that TE still play a more minor roll in fantasy. Last year I got lucky and went with Witten, and he actually helped me reach the finals of the league I was in. But there are only about four or five TE's that will on a consistent basis give you good points. I think that list includes Witten, Gates, Gonzo and Clark. I hope that Vernon Davis will emerge onto that list and I think this season the TE who will improve tremendously will be Kellen Winslow. If you can get your hands on one of these TE's, without sacrificing talent at the WR and RB positions, than you have a solid team. My personal preference is to make sure I get one of these top TE, because I have had luck with tremendous TE's. But WR's do out produce TE's and you should make sure that if you draft a TE before you draft one of your Wide-outs that there are plenty of talented receivers out there left to pick. -SDKAugust 5, 2008 - 5:20pm
Witten could very well be the top TE by year end, the Cowboys offense should just be sick.

re:
The short answer is no. The long answer is that WRs will usually out-produce TEs as the most non Gates TEs can hope for is about 600 yards and 5 TDs. In comparison, there were 20 WRs with 1000 yards receiving. There were 6 TEs with over 100 fantasy points, and 35 WRs with over 100 fantasy points. Not to mention there were many more low to high 90s fantasy points receivers as opposed to one TE in the 90s.
