San Francisco 49ers Martz-ified

I wonder how Alex Smith (or maybe Shaun Hill) and the 49ers are going to adjust to the Martz. Any thoughts?

It's the offense

Martz isn't going to save this offense and although I'm no expert at X's and O's, I know the Niners need some personnel help to have any semblance of the Lions in '07. The Niners have Vernon Davis and Frank Gore, but the offensive line still stinks, the quarterbacks are both sub-par and there are no decent WRs to speak of. Martz doesn't traditionally use the TE that much but he's going to have to take advantage of the freakish Davis.

more receivers

There's talk that he might bring in some new talents at WR--such as a Mike Furrey or Shaun McDonald type. Personally, I think they should go after a proven WR in free agency. I also think Alex Smith might soon lose his job if he doesn't step up.

all the help they can get

any of those guys or even Moose (mentioned in your submitted link recently) would help a great deal. It's not a good sign when your best receiver in '07 is Arnaz Battle. But yes, they should get a top 20 kind of receiver, not simply another possession type guy. Some one who can be a playmaker and get behind the secondary.

Gore will excel

I can't speak about their passing game, but if Martz can make Kevin Jones look half-decent, than Frank Gore is in for a huge year.

Please

The 49ers won't get more than 6 wins next year. Let's see if they are smart enough to draft a QB like Flacco in the second round or they won't have a prayer. Manningham isn't the solution to this team.

Improved

I think they come out improved next year. Martz can free up Gore if he can get a decent passing game up and running. The passing game is definitely going to be the biggest question mark. The best thing they could do this off-season is to obtain some nice free agent WR on the cheap like Bryant Johnson who can get some new blood on the field and liven up the passing game. They could try for a big name, but I don't think they will pay for a quality talent. NYSportsguy--Flacco might not be a bad call for them. If Alex Smith isn't going to be the solution, they need someone fresh in there who can train with Shaun Hill and run Martz's system. Flacco definitely has some toughness to last in Martz QB-vulnerable schemes, and he's got a gun.
