Is the NL done on national TV?

ESPN’s baseball programming should just call itself what it is: the Boston/New York plus other AL teams network (BNY+ALN. Terrible abbreviation). These producers are getting outlandish. Milwaukee vs. St. Louis and Chicago vs. San Diego could have been played tonight, but fans of the “nation” (which is now how the network annoyingly refers to the Red Sox) NEEDED another nationally televised game against the Twins (a team with no national following). East coast bias notwithstanding, this programming is infuriating. The Dodgers, for example, have one game scheduled on ESPN in the next two months. Arizona has none. St. Louis gets the privilege of one. Oakland: a whopping zero.

Good work ESPN! You are driving actual fans of the game of baseball towards big market, wealthy teams rather than showing balanced programming of good match ups. I admit the NL is weaker, but that doesn’t mean it should be disregarded. This is why another national channel needs to do more games. Thanks to TBS for trying.

great observation

i didn't even notice it but you're completely right. they should follow TNT's model for basketball in which the "best" games are on TV. it'd be nice for ESPN to devote their super-production to some other markets and give fans a chance to see what the league has to offer. but as everything with ESPN these days..if it don't make dollars it don't make sense..-bB

I Want More Mets Baseball

Living out here in California I see nothing but boring baseball. Why can't more Mets games be broadcasted on ESPN or the rest of us? NY Mets did get Johan Santana and are expected to be playoff contenders after all. Good call....ESPN needs to rethink their programming decisions.

Business as usual

Here's my take: I do agree that ESPN should broaden their coverage of the MLB since watching the Yankees and/or BoSox doesn't do anything for me. It would be nice to watch other marquee matchups, whether it be two hot teams playing against each other or a great pitcher's duel. I'm a fan of baseball more than I am a fan of my Dodgers (and not because they let me down year after year) But for ESPN, it's a business. For the rest of the country, especially states with no baseball team, the Yanks and BoSox are their team. They get better ratings when one or the other is shown and it's all about the advertisement dollars. As much interest as I have to see the Royals play the A's, or Cubs versus the Marlins, it just doesn't make sense for ESPN to gamble viewership when ad dollars are at stake. I'm not picking ESPN's side since I would love to see national coverage of all the great matchups outside of anything NYY or BOS. But like I said, it's a business decision and if I was head of ESPN programming, I would do the same thing too.

only game in town

as far as ESPN is concerned is Yankees-Sox, though I would think that during interleague play they'd be all over that since there are some interesting matchups. There are decent rivalries out there, Giants-Dodgers being one and matchups of well playing teams or good pitcher matchups. They of anyone should realize that.

Cubs vs. Marlins

Would actually be a good game worth watching and I think would get ratings. A's vs. Royals isn't worth putting on ESPN though.
