Daunte Culpepper Signs with Raiders For One Year

Culpepper signs with the Raiders today, mostly as an insurance policy to 1st round draft pick JaMarcus Russell, who is currently holding out for a contract.

Seems ironic to me that the Raiders would sign the player with whom many compared Russell to before and after the Raiders drafted him in the spring. I don’t know if Culpepper will get much playing time if and when Russell signs, but I’m not sure how much he has left in the tank and given the woeful state of the Raiders offense.

What is your take on the situation? Will this move push Russell to signing and what do you think of his prospects? And Culpepper? Can he still play and put up some stats?

Good move IMHO

I think this is a good move by the Raiders in my opinion. They only have Andrew Walter and Josh McCown in camp prior to signing Daunte. Let's take a look at last year. Walter had a QB rating of below 60 and threw only 3 TDs compared to 13 INTs. That is never going to get the job done. McCown appeared in only two games last year and didn't attempt a pass. Pretty much hand off duty to kill the clock. Now, looking at those numbers, how is JaMarcus supposed to learn the system if the two other QBs can't even complete a pass to the right team? McCown had 9TDs/11INTs in 2005 btw. I have no doubt that Daunte can at least get 20TDS/16INTs if he played the full season. I'll take those numbers over Walter/McCown any day! And if JaMarcus does sign, he can have a veteran QB show him the ropes. I don't care what I read in the paper or online...No QB straight from college is NFL ready from the get go. I would rather have a rookie QB learn the system the first year with limited snaps, then to throw them into game situations right from the start. More often than naught, QBs straight from college will do poorly in their rookie season. There's no rush to get JaMarcus to start right away. Defensive lineman are a lot faster and stronger than the NCAA. Good signing by the Raiders!

I agree.

This is good for the Raiders, even though Culpepper has been slumping due to injuries. At the very least, he helps them developer JaMarcus, who's the QB of their future. Let's see how long Daunte will last...
