Which brings us to Derek Jeter, the Yankees and the union we once assumed was unbreakable. But if Favre started for the Jets last night, we must consider what not long ago would have been unthinkable. Jeter looks in decline. The Yanks look as if they want to get younger and – when possible – less expensive. And suddenly that expiring contract after the 2010 season becomes the elephant in the room of the Yankees’ future.
tough to imagine Hard to imagine Jeter on another team (Dodgers? Tigers?) and the Yankees without Jeter. But as the writer points out, anything is possible in pro sports these days. I can see some merit to the Yankee brass perhaps thinking they would be paying millions and millions for a name rather than a player who will perform at an elite level into his late 30’s/early 40’s.
I still think Derek can play and his is just mired in the same muck that the rest of the team is.
