After only the 4th win of a disappointing season, Niners fans have to be encouraged by just about anything, including a win lead by the 3rd string QB Shaun Hill. Hill successfully led the team down the field when he needed to, converting on 9 of 15 3rd down conversions, much better than the 29% rate the team was succeeding on going into this game.
Watching the game, I was reminded of teams such as the 2001 Ravens team, which did not allow its offense to lose a game, just protect the game. If the niners can get another pass rusher or two, we might have a defense able to support our poor offense.
This offseason, we clearly need some upgrades somewhere. I still believe
Alex Smith can be the solution on offense, and that Shaun Hill is nothing more than a Trent Dilfer on the 2001 Ravens – but a solid one if we have the best defense. Since our defense is not the best in the NFL, . . we need Alex Smith to come back strong next year and be a legitimate starting NFL QB. Otherwise th 49ers are doomed to mediocrity for the next 10-15 years as well. We can’t afford to give up the #1 pick after just 3 years.
Let Hill play out the string This team needs to end the season on a high note. Let Hill play out the string to instill some confidence in this team. That is, assuming that he continues to play well. He could just be a “one-hit wonder”.
Hill reminds me of Romo Romo was actually worse when he took over last year for Dallas. Then Romo realized all of his offensive weapons and flourished. Hill (at this point) is a poor man’s Romo but he does remind me of him. A quirky delivery enables him to throw from odd positions and his timing is impressive. We’ll see how he fares against a real defense (the Tampa 2) when the Bucs come to town this week though. -bB
