Manchester United out to show they are the best team on the planet
By this time next week, Manchester United may just prove they are undoubtedly the best soccer club on the planet. They’ve already wrapped up the English Premier League title, holding off a very game Chelsea club. And now they will face that very same Chelsea team to determine who the top club in Europe is.
It’s amazing the year it’s been for English football. Three out of four Champions League semifinalists were from the EPL. And now for the first time ever, the Champions League finals will feature two EPL teams.
In many ways, this has been a team of destiny this year. From the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo to the steady Ryan Giggs, this team has been solid from back to front. They also have a great work ethic and despite having so many stars, they work well as a team. Credit Sir Alex Ferguson with holding this team together and guiding them to their 10th League Title. And now the team stands in front of history, how often do you have an opportunity to win both your league title and Champions League?
All that stands in their way is Chelsea, who will be looking for revenge of sorts after losing out on the EPL title. Chelsea is playing very well and I expect these two teams to go after one another early, as opposed to what critics have said about Manchester United’s style of play in recent weeks. I doubt either team will go into a defensive shell, but instead will try to score, as the Final is just one game, not the home-and-away series it has been. I expect offensive fireworks and the winner will undoubtedly be considered the best team in all of Europe this season. I would expect nothing less from a season that has had a decidedly English “feel” to it all along.
Next to the World Cup and maybe Euro championships, this is the most watched tournament in soccer. I think ManU will prevail but Chelsea is playing with a bit of an edge. They don’t want to leave Moscow without hardware after losing out on the EPL championship to ManU.

This final, especially for an American not yet sick of EPL dominance, is going to be fantastic. The teams’ reputations for superstar finesse play will fly out the window as they will go all out to avoid penalty kicks. I’ve got Man U taking this 2-1 on a late Tevez goal. Regardless, seeing the Russian police react to hooligans could be comic fodder for years to come (assuming no one is beaten to death).
