Fantasy Observations from the Seattle-San Diego Preseason Game

1. Charlie Frye can get it done. Matt Hasselbeck’s injury is not expected to keep him out of the regular season- but if it does keep the veteran out of week 1, Hasselbeck owners should definitely pick up Frye. The former Brown quarterback has seen extensive work with the first team this summer, and looks very comfortable in that west coast attack. If Frye needs to play, and your other fantasy quarterback’s include the likes of O’Sullivan, Leinart, or Croyle, then Frye is probably the better play.

2. LT owners are going to be very happy. San Diego’s offensive line is POWERFUL. Darren Sproles had enormous holes to run through en route to a 102 yard rushing performance on a mere 13 carries. Now imagine what the bigger, faster, and overall more talented Tomlinson is going to do behind that line this season! Think 1500 yards and 12 touchdowns- and thats a stingy projection. Don’t worry about Hester as a touchdown vulture. The rookie has a nose for the end zone, but LT’s game will always be better.

3. Don’t start a Seattle running back. For Morris, Duckett, or Jones to be viable fantasy starters, one needed to excel this preseason while the others stunk. Instead, they’ve all been solid. (Except Justin Forsett, who has been outstanding. He probably is a year away from competing for a starting spot though.) This is the most muddled running back by committee situation in the league. At the end of the season Seattle will probably have over 1500 team rushing yards, but since those yards will be divided up between ball carriers hey won’t help your team at all.

4. Don’t judge Phillip River’s value on this game. We won’t know how Rivers will produce statistically until the season starts. He played solid on Monday night, but he was playing without the league’s best running back (LT) and one of the league’s most dynamic tight ends (Gates). If you own him, certainly don’t cut him. But I’d wait until he is tossing touchdowns to start him.

I didn’t watch this game, I didn’t watch this game, so thanks for the update and analysis. I don’t see why Julius Jones is getting drafted so much earlier than Morris these days, it looks like a pure RBBC in Seattle. I’m glad to hear LT will thrive this year. I have him in one league and couldn’t be more thrilled. Did you get any indications about the San Diego Pass Offense? e.g. Chambers or V. Jackson? Just curious.

Rivers will be fine. With a back like LT he will have lots of freedom to operate. LT forces teams to leave seven or eight men in the box giving his receivers 1v1 coverage, and any decent wideout can blast a 1v1 most of the time. His fantasy numbers will benefit from LT

I think Morris has the edge over Jones in the RB battle because he’s been there. Not sure what JJ’s previous experience in the west coast offense is but Holmgren’s scheme is far from simple. Jones is probably more talented but I think Morris is going to be the most consistent of the bunch. too bad Duckett will vulture all of the TDs though. -The Answer

I’m with you on this, I I’m with you on this, I think Morris should be decent.

there is going to be a lot of pressure on hasselback to throw the ball 40 to 50 times a game and that defense since they dont have much of a running game and the receivers are hurt. rivers wasnt a stat guy anyway but he knows how to win games. and nobody had o’sullivan or leinart in their fantasy teams, there are at least 10 guys after the top tier QBS (Manning, Brady, Brees) that anyone could take.

Phillip Rivers will be a solid QB this year with numbers similar to what he put up in 2006.

Maurice Morris will be a stud in Seattle. Julius Jones is a weakling.

T.J. Duckett is on the verge of getting cut.

Oh yea and Nate Burleson will be a solid #2 WR until Engram gets back by week 6 or so and steals the show.
