1. Can the Giants’ Defense Pressure the QB?
Strahan and Osi. Tuck and Kiwi. I mean, who would you rather have? Strahan and Umenyiora were both complete defensive ends- guys who could stop the run and pass. The new starters, Justin Tuck and Matthias Kiwanuka, both have questions to answer. Tuck needs to prove he can provide pressure on the quarterback as a defensive end on all three downs. Kiwanuka needs to show he has the strength and technique to play the run. If the weaknesses many see in these young defensive ends are no longer showing up, then the Giants defensive line will be fine.
2. Is Jason Campbell’s 25th new offense in 25 years (hyperbole) going to work in 2008?
I genuinely believe Jim Zorn has what it takes to eventually have a consistently potent aerial attack in Washington. However, this is a veteran-laden team that wants to win now. It really comes down to Jason Campbell, and if he is ready to be a franchise quarterback. The offensive line is good enough and the running backs are outstanding. However, Campbell needs to be more poised and accurate this year than ever if Washington’s offense is to offer any explosion. The Redskins have a few rookie playmakers on offense, but if Campbell cannot deliver them the ball this offense will go nowhere. Portis, Betts, Moss, Randle El, and Cooley offer the ‘Skins enough playmakers to be good. Include rookies Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas, and Fred Davis- now there is enough offensive playmakers to win the NFC. But Campbell will need to be a pinpoint sniper hero for Washington’s young talent to benefit, and I don’t think he is good enough to be that guy.
I think Campbell will do well tonight, good enough to win. I’m picking the Redskins, 20-17.
