Considering the Contenders for Brett Favre

So, the truth is coming out. We know all those text messages, rumors and the like originally pointing towards Brett Favre returning to play again and come out of retirement were half true. Favre wants to come out of retirement, but he does not want to play for the Packers anymore. He wants to go elsewhere, preferably to a team that can win. It appears the Packers did not want Favre to come out of retirement and instead are ready to begin the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay. If you’re Brett Favre, you probably feel disrespected and want to start looking elsewhere. Which brings us to the breaking news today that Favre wants the Packers to grant him an unconditional release so that he can try getting on with a different team: http://fantasysportsmatrix.com/buzz/breaking_news_favre_asks_uncondition... *
But where would Favre go, on the condition that he does want to come back and play for a contender? Also, it would help for the team to utilize a West Coast offense so he wouldn’t have to start from scratch, so to speak, and so he could play in a system in which he is familiar and can succeed.

Well, he can’t go to the obvious teams. The Patriots, Cowboys, and Colts all are set at the QB position. I won’t go into teams that need QBs but are just not contenders yet, teams like the Bears, 49ers, and the Falcons. Here are five teams I can see Favre going to:

Carolina Panthers: Given the injury issues plaguing Jake Delhomme, the location of the Panthers (the South), this could work. It doesn’t hurt having a quality WR like Steve Smith in the lineup as well.

Jacksonville Jaguars: If the team was not behind David Garrard, this could be a great fit. If Garrard gets hurt or underperforms in training camp, this team could be a contender for Favre’s services.

Baltimore Ravens: Good defense, improving offense, and a rookie QB in Joe Flacco. Sounds like a good fit for Favre.

Houston Texans: This team, under Gary Kubiak, runs a West Coast offense, is in the South, and is improving. They need help at QB since Sage Rosenfels is the current starter.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Some analysts, including ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, believe this to be the most likely destination for Favre. Jon Gruden loves collecting QB’s, the Bucs have an unsettled QB position, and this is a team that can improve drastically if they get someone of Favre’s caliber behind center. Look out for the Bucs!

What do you all think of this situation? Where will Favre go in ’08?

The last two are good I really don’t see Jacksonville not providing Gerrard with anything he wants He’s a stud.

Favre would work in Tampa and Houston, and I espicially like the latter as contending for his services to break their franchise’s miserable playoff history (or lack thereof).

Agreed I can see him going to Baltimore, Houston and Tampa Bay. I would say the Bucs seem like a very good fit. I would prefer to see him go to Carolina, I can see him doing well there.
