French Open finals: A New Champion and a Streak Continues

The French Open is now over, and what a grand slam it was. We witnessed Ana Ivanovic win her first grand slam (and likely the first of many) and Rafael Nadal join Bjorn Borg in the history books in a laugher over Roger Federer.

Ana Ivanovic wins her first grand slam at the French Open

She handled the upstart Russian Dinara Safina easily in 2 sets, 6-4, 6-3. Not only did she break through to win her first grand slam, her finals appearance assures she is now the new number one ranked player in the world. What an impressive double for her! I’ve no doubt Ivanovic, Maria Sharapova and other women tennis players are happy with the retirement of Justine Henin. Henin’s retirement sure paved the way for Ivanovic, but take nothing away from the Serb. She was on-point and in-form these past two weeks. The only question remains is how good can she continue to be and become? We’ll find out at Wimbledon next month, surely.

Rafa Nadal dominates Roger Federer in winning his fourth straight French Open

Dominant. Just dominant. Roger Federer could do nothing today against the unstoppable force that is Nadal. The Spaniard steamrolled over the number one player by the unbelievably easy scoreline of 6-1, 6-3, 6-0. Too easy. But that’s how good Nadal is on clay and at the French. He’s absolutely on another planet. 46 winners. Only 7 unforced errors. Just. Amazing. Only Bjorn Borg has won four French titles in a row, and Rafa looks prepared to win another four in a row, he is truly without peer at Roland Garros right now.

Hope you all enjoyed the French Open as much as I did. On to Wimbledon!
